That’s the end of Apple’s main summer presentation – WWDC 2023 . Cook and company today revealed key updates to Apple’s operating systems and some new hardware.
We have already expressed own assumptions about all possible newcomers and shared rumors about the iOS 17 mobile system.
Many of our predictions and expectations came true, but some remained wishful thinking at least until next year.
1. The new MacBook Air 15″ on the old M2 chip
The first presented novelty was the new MacBook models on Apple’s ARM chips. After a short introduction and a portion of statistics, we were shown the new Mac Book Air 13/15″ .
- The size of the display of the new product is 15.3″ , but under the hood, unfortunately, is not the latest Apple M2 processor .
- According to the developers, the new MacBook Air will work up to 18 hours without recharging.
The cost of the novelty in the USA will be $1,299 , while the 13-inch model has dropped to $1,099 .
2. Mac Studio running M2 Max and M2 Ultra
The next novelty was a computer – Mac Studio . This is already the second generation of the mid-budget Apple device.
Different device configurations will run on the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips . The latter has become the most powerful ARM chip from Apple to date. It’s a 24-core processor with 76-core graphics. It is made on a 5-nm process and supports up to 192 GB of RAM.
The base version of Mac Studio with M2 Max will cost $1,999 in the US .
3. Mac Pro on M2 Ultra Processors
- Quite unexpectedly, the third novelty was an updated computer for professionals – Mac Pro .
- The design of the device has remained unchanged, but the upgrade options and power have greatly increased.
- The stuffing will be built around the M2 Ultra processor . The board has 6 PCI expansion slots and 8 Thunderbolt 4 ports . There is support for up to 6 Pro Display XDR monitors .
The price of Mac Pro in the USA starts at $6999 .
4. iOS 17 with minimal changes and a new application
After a quick presentation of three new Mac models in 17 minutes, residents of Cupertino moved on to new software. The first, according to tradition, was iOS 17 .
- First, we talked about the new possibilities of customizing the contact card. Hopefully, this will not be the most important change.
- The new Live Voicemail feature will allow the subscriber’s speech to be translated into text in real time.
- The iMessage service received several changes . Among the interesting innovations are the translation of voice messages into text, more opportunities to share data and new stickers in correspondence.
- The familiar AirDrop service has received several changes for the first time in a long time. Data transfer between iPhones will now be faster. For the transfer of contacts, a new feature called NameDrop was invented .
- The built-in iOS keyboard has received a new word prediction algorithm for autocorrection. The dictation mode was also pumped. We hope that the typographical error will become less.
In iOS 17, there will be a new horizontal Standby mode for using the smartphone as a clock. When the gadget is on the magnetic stand, it will be able to show the time, calendar entries, upcoming sports events and other information.
They promised to add a new Journal app later this year . It will accumulate photos, user activity data and notes. Machine learning will offer selections of photos and collages. Hopefully in the future we will be told why to use it.
As expected, the voice assistant Siri received a simplified voice command to call.
5. iPadOS 17 with customizable lock screen.
The next novelty was a new system for iPad.
- Apple’s developers have addressed last year’s gap and added customization settings that were only available on the iPhone. Tablets have received much more opportunities to display photos, widgets and information on the locked screen of the tablet.
- An almost genius solution was the ability to add several timers at the same time. There is enough space on the tablet screen for this.
- Unexpectedly, in the story about iPadOS, they talked about the innovation of the Health program . A few minor tweaks and an updated design for display on a tablet.
- Users who often work on a tablet with PDF documents received new opportunities.
6. macOS Sonoma with widgets on the desktop
It’s the turn of the desktop operating system for Mac.
- Finally, people from Cupertino have allowed adding widgets to the macOS desktop. Information cards will disappear if necessary and adjust to the installed wallpaper. Widgets have become interactive, with their help you can control your computer and even nearby devices.
- macOS decided to turn into a serious gaming platform. They talked about the new possibilities of graphics in games. For convenience, the compatibility of the system with gamepads from consoles has been improved, and sound can be output to AirPods without delays .
- A special game mode will allow you to focus on games, increase the performance of your Mac and temporarily silence notifications.
Special emphasis was placed on chips for video conferences and remote presentations. The system will allow you to make cool demonstrations, replace the background with content from Mac, and the rest of the users will be able to activate cool reactions with gestures.
The Safari browser , as always, has become faster and more secure. Developers of web applications have received many new tools for creating advanced applications and services in the browser.
7. Several software innovations for streaming music and video
- The AirPods headset received an Adaptive Audio mode. Transparency and noise reduction will be turned on automatically, depending on the environment.
- CarPlay for cars now supports SharePlay . Not only the driver, but also passengers will be able to manage music and broadcast content.
- The tvOS operating system , which was not even mentioned at the last presentation, has learned several tricks. The most interesting are the updated Control Center and support for FaceTime (the camera will be an iPhone).
8. Anniversary version of watchOS 10 with an updated design
- The evening of widgets continued, information cards also appeared on the Apple watch.
- As always, there are new watch faces (hello Snoopy!) and workout modes.
- The watch interface has received layers, now some parts of the program and system elements can occupy only part of the screen.
- After a software update, the watch will be able to connect via Bluetooth to compatible bikes and more accurately read information about the user’s activity.
- Apple Watch Ultra will be able to draw a map in three-dimensional mode.
- The watch will record the user’s emotional state and record all the data in a log to accumulate statistics.
9. The long-awaited One more thing – Apple Vision Pro
For a long time, the people of Cupertino ignored the tradition of the last killer feature at the presentation. Today, it was revived and as the icing on the cake, the long-awaited augmented reality headset was shown.
This is a fundamentally new device from Apple, which should give users an absolutely incredible experience for watching movies, video conferencing and even working with documents.
- Tim Cook proudly announced the beginning of the era of spatial computers. Well, we never felt the post-PC era with the iPad, perhaps the same is waiting for the new Apple headset.
- Apple Vision Pro users will get a virtual interface with icons, multiple windows and a new way of managing. The system will fix the user’s gaze, and hand gestures will confirm the choice. Of course, some actions can be done with the help of the Siri assistant.
The impression of the device is slightly spoiled by the cable and what it connects to. Most likely, the device will need a powerful power source.
The headset will support a special game mode with a new way of interaction.
To promote the headset, a lot of 3D content from various studios and publishers will be released.
Finally, they talked about the modular design of the headset and the same external battery that will have to be carried in a pocket or on a belt. Autonomy is frankly not pleasing, they promise only 2 hours of work without recharging.
Of course, the device has an advanced audio system that supports spatial sound, and a LiDAR sensor is provided for accurate positioning of objects in space.
The cost of the device in the USA will be $3499.
